Interview Tips For College Students

Although you will face many questions during an interview, here are five frequently asked questions that you can prepare for.

When practicing your answers, remember to focus on how your skills and experience make you the best person for the job.

  1. Tell me about yourself. This is one of the first questions employers will ask in interviews. The interviewer is not interested in where you were born, whether you are the first born or middle child, or your favorite color. What they are really asking is what qualifies you for the job. Respond by talking about your work experience, education, or extracurricular activities.
  2. What do you consider to be your major strengths? It is important to know your strengths and to speak about them with confidence. Do you have a positive attitude? Are you a good problem solver? Able to work under tight deadlines? Are you organized and detail-oriented? What about your communication or leadership skills? There are many good answers for this one. Be sure to offer some proof by describing an incident when these strengths made a business difference.
  3. What did you like least about your last job?Answering this question is a little tricky. Make sure the thing you liked least is not a major part of the new job. And, don’t go negative when you speak about your former company or boss. Here are a few safe answers: looking for more responsibility or growth potential, job was routine and lacked challenge, laid off in company restructuring or company going out of business.
  4. Why should I hire you?Stress what you have to offer, not how nice it would be to work there. Tell why your skills and accomplishments make you the best candidate for the job. Don’t be modest; toot your own horn!
  5. Do you have any questions for me?Saying, “I can’t think of anything” is not a winning response. Always come prepared with questions. You are not the only one being interviewed here. You are also interviewing the interviewer.

Giving vague answers and using the same example over and over are two common interviewing mistakes. By preparing your responses in advance, you will avoid these pitfalls and have a successful interview. Remember your goal is to appear confident and organized, not robotic and scripted.

Tip #5 is great. I’ve noticed that sometimes college students hesitate to ask the same questions of different interviewers. If you’re interviewing with 3 or 4 different people, go ahead and ask each interviewer the same questions! You’ll definitely hear interesting and different perspectives, and perhaps even pinpoint some areas of the company that are inconsistent and require further investigation.

Hi Andrea,

Thanks for stopping by!

You are so correct. Ask the same question to multiple interviewers. It is great to see what kind of response you get. Great tip!

Have a great weekend…
Josh
